At Iron Frog Press, the Original Print Frog® Glass Baren was designed by master printmaker Matt Bagley specifically for the demands of hand printing. Matt developed the original design in 2013 for his own printing needs and began making the Print Frog® available to the printmaking community in 2014.
What Is a Glass Baren?
A glass baren is a handheld tool used to transfer ink from an inked printing block onto a substrate. Instead of running the substrate and block through a press, the artist places the substrate over the inked block and uses the baren to apply pressure.
Glass provides a smooth, dense surface that can move across the substrate while applying consistent pressure. The design of the baren—including its shape, weight, handle, and working surface—is what makes it suitable for hand printing.

Hand Printing Without a Baren
You don't need a printing press—or even a purpose-made baren—to make a hand-pulled relief print.
Wooden spoons are one of the most common household objects used for hand printing. Printmaking educators and museums also describe using spoons as an alternative to a baren.
Printmakers have experimented with other improvised tools as well, including drawer pulls, cabinet knobs, and other smooth objects that can be used to burnish the back of the paper.
These methods can work. The problem is that these objects weren't designed for printmaking.
The Limitations of DIY Methods
A wooden spoon was one of the tools Matt Bagley used when he was developing his own approach to hand printing. He also experimented with a wooden drawer pull.
The question wasn't whether these objects could make a print—they could. The question was whether they could provide the comfort, control, pressure, and consistency needed for repeated hand printing.
We have spoken with many printmakers who have used wooden spoons and other improvised tools, and we've heard similar concerns:

Printing With or Without a Press
One of the advantages of a glass baren is its versatility. The Print Frog® can be used for hand printing when a press is not available, but it can also be a valuable companion to a printing press.
Even when printing on a press, prints can sometimes come out under-inked in certain areas. You can spot ink those under-printed areas and use the glass baren to bring them up to an overall consistent print.
This makes the glass baren a useful finishing tool for achieving more consistent prints for an edition.

Glass Baren vs. Traditional Japanese Baren
The traditional Japanese baren was developed as part of the Japanese woodblock-printing process and is particularly associated with mokuhanga, the Japanese tradition of woodblock printing. Traditional Japanese woodblock printing uses water-based pigments and Japanese papers, and the baren is an essential part of the hand-printing process.
A traditional hon-baren is constructed from a tightly coiled bamboo-twine core, paper, and bamboo bark. The bamboo covering is twisted to create a handle, while the opposite side forms the working surface. The printer uses a burnishing motion to apply pressure and transfer the pigment from the woodblock to the paper.
Different core thicknesses affect the amount of pressure and the character of the printing.
Traditional barens also require care and maintenance. The bamboo covering of a traditional baren wears with use and may need to be replaced.
The Print Frog® Takes a Different Approach
The Print Frog® Glass Baren was designed with a different goal: to provide the printmaker with the weight and pressure needed for hand printing without requiring the same grip strength used to hold and manipulate a traditional Japanese baren.
Its ergonomic handle allows the printmaker to work with the weight of the glass rather than relying primarily on grip strength.
We have heard from printmakers who had difficulty hand printing that using the Print Frog® allowed them to successfully return to hand printing. For these artists, the difference wasn't simply the material—it was the way the tool could be held and used.
The Print Frog® is also made for repeated studio use. Its glass construction is resistant to ink, chemicals, and solvents and is easy to clean, without the bamboo covering and wrapping that require replacement on a traditional Japanese baren.
Traditional Japanese barens and the Print Frog® Glass Baren are both designed for hand printing, but they approach the process differently. The traditional baren relies on a flexible bamboo construction and the printer's hand pressure and burnishing technique. The Print Frog® uses the weight, rigidity, and smooth surface of glass to help the printmaker apply pressure with less reliance on grip strength.
Glass Baren vs. Brayer
A glass baren and a brayer serve two different purposes.
A brayer is used for inking a printing block.
A glass baren is used for printing, applying pressure to the substrate to transfer the image.
The two tools are not interchangeable. The brayer applies ink to the raised surface of the printing block, while the glass baren is used to apply pressure during the printing process.
Glass Baren vs. Glass Muller: They Are Not the Same Tool
Although both tools can be made from glass, a glass baren and a glass muller are designed for completely different jobs.
A glass baren is designed for printmaking. It applies pressure to a substrate to transfer ink from a printing block during hand printing.
A glass muller is designed for pigment and paint preparation. Mullers are traditionally made from materials such as glass or marble and have a flat bottom that is used against a grinding slab to grind or disperse pigments into a binding medium.
The working surfaces are designed accordingly. Glass mullers typically have a flat working surface intended for grinding against a slab.
A glass muller is not a substitute for a glass baren.
Glass is simply the material. The shape, working surface, and intended function determine what the tool is designed to do.
How to Use a Glass Baren
1. Carve your printing block.
Prepare your linoleum, wood, MDF, or other relief printing block.
2. Roll ink onto the raised surface of the block.
Use a brayer to apply an even layer of ink to the raised areas of the block.
3. Place your substrate carefully over the inked block.
Position your paper or other substrate over the block.
4. Use the glass baren on the substrate.
Place the Print Frog® on the back of the substrate.
5. Apply even pressure while working across the printed area.
Move the baren across the back of the substrate, working methodically across the entire printed area.
6. Check your print.
If you are not using tab or pin registration, use the Print Frog® as a weight to hold the substrate in place while you carefully check the print. When you are satisfied with the print, lift the substrate to reveal the finished image.
Like any printmaking technique, successful hand printing takes practice. Substrate, ink, block surface, pressure, and technique all affect the final print.
